HAIR CARE n BEAUTY SCENE Protective Hair Styles 101 By Chana Yon P rotective hair styles, in the past, were used to assist with transitioning from relaxed to natural or simply a way to get past growing pains. Presently, that has not been the case. Today braiding, weaving, twisting and locks have all become an avenue to adding flair and style! Protective styles are trending! Besides being low maintenance, which is number one on the scale, the hair is given a break by putting it away and length is preserved. When trying to achieve hair length goals protective styles are highly recommended as it reduces daily manipulation which can cause breakage. THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR Despite the fact that protective styles are so convenient, there are things to watch out for: • Itching-This can be caused by over drying and tension. • Dryness-Hair can become brittle and break if it remains dry for long periods of time. • Excessive Tension-This can lead to itching, bumps, swelling of the scalp and even hair loss. • Smelly Hair-Reduction in shampooing and mildew are the main reasons for smelly hair; the look of some styles can be drastically altered after shampooing and trapped moisture from improper drying causes mildew. SCALP CARE TIPS Just because protective styles can be so carefree for the wearers, the scalp should not be neglected! Here are a few tips to help maintain a healthy scalp: • Protective styles are not intended to last forever and should not stay in longer than 6-8 weeks. It's imperative to give the scalp a chance to breathe allowing for shampoo, treatments and trims to prevent breakage and splitting. • For times when there is dryness and itching, always have products to soothe your scalp. • A clean scalp is a happy scalp. It's important to find different ways to clean the hair and scalp without altering the look of your style. • Alopecia. If you are experiencing a continuous pain days after your service, then it is highly recommended to TAKE IT OUT!!!! Many protective styles require some reasonable levels of tension in order to execute the style, however excessive tension can cause what is called Traction Alopecia resulting in hair loss.
